April just went.The garden is now lying fallow, apart from the newly sown lawn, which is happily feeding the local bird life; seed for thought for the next time around.
Haven’t been overdoing it in April [apart from Easter egg exploration and consumption] and a trip to Japan. Had quite a long look at the world of microcredentials. Seems in some areas it’s thriving and in others it requires further work to convince educators it’s a worthwhile pathway to adopt. Some good approaches to micro credentials out there, especially for professional development of teachers.
The new Pacific Journal of Technology Enhanced Learning is gearing up for its first edition; I wish the team well. We could do with some quality research in this area and where better than in the Pacific region :-)?[rest of the world not excluded from participating of course].

1. Practical Online Learning eBook: Practical Online Learning and Laboratories for Engineering, Science and Technology – Steve Mackay and Darrell Fisher. Very nicely presented material with excellent diagrams, explanations and references; there’s a lot to digest. Others could follow suit with e-books for their specific discipline. Excellent resource for engineering students and others in related fields.
2. Pedagogies of Engagement: Resource Collections. This site provides a comprehensive overview of the various approaches to student engagement. Some useful ideas and guides for your perusal and maybe use.
3. Teaching in a Digital Age. Sometimes one forgets about the contribution some people make to the world of education. Toiny Bates has been on the scene fro a long time and has contributed much and still is. If you haven’t downloaded his book, Teaching in a Digital Age’, it’s about time you did. Those of you who have forgotten about it should read it again in conjunction with Tony’s ever changing, challenging and informative blog.
4. Listening to teachers: A qualitative exploration of teaching practices in higher and further education, and the implications for digital. Another one of those informative and useful Jisc reports which provide perceptive and send analysis of topical subjects, in this case teaching practices in the digital world of education.
5.Educator Micro-credentials Competency base recognition for professional learning. This is a useful website for those interested in the development and use of micro- credentials at various levels of education.Extract from the site: ‘Micro-credentials provide educators with competency-based recognition for the skills they learn throughout their careers’. 6. The Social Learning Guide Book by Julian Stood. Worth entering your details and downloading a free copy of this interesting and entertaining booklet. It has some very useful insights , ideas and suggestions and informed comment in relation to social learning. Diagrams are a delight.
7.Learning About Learning. This was written a couple of years ago. It’s still highly relevant to the current learning environments and how they can be created to enhance learning through the application of six strategies.Interesting to note what is perceived as ‘missing’ in the teaching approaches.

8. Trigger Questions:Their Role In Problem Based Learning;Do They Add To The Quality Of Interactive Business Case Study Solutions? I was looking at the way questions are presented to learners and what sort of reaction would be possible to a range of different types of questions. In the process I came across this article. I think it’s a useful in the context of how questions can trigger the learning process.

10. In India, MOOCs are now part of the education System. Is this the future of education? Some question the quality of Indian education, however, it’s the concept that might be the answer to increasing the number of people improving their education and more than likely their prospects of employment; could be implemented anywhere in the world. 12. New Zealand Initiatives
12.1 The new peer-reviewed open access journal PJTEL: Pacific Journal of Technology Enhanced Learning, has announced the first call for papers for the journal.
The journal aims to promote informed use of technology in learning and teaching—the scholarship of technology enhanced learning (SoTEL). In particular, empirical research that grows current understanding and application of the affordances of technology for improved pedagogical practice and student learning outcomes.
Submit a paper for publishing in the inaugural issue. Submissions are due by 31 May 2019, with a publication timeline in July 2019.

13. Odd one out: Honda Environmental E-learning, is a quiz-type tutorial designed to
deepen knowledge about environmental issues and Honda’s environmental initiatives.
