G’day
Rain is what we have and lots of it, in fact it’s been torrential. However we have had some very nice sunny weather as well and at least the rain is warm (25C). The possums are busy devouring the Quinces. The dog has ideas on devouring them (the possums not the quinces).Daylight saving finishes to day so an extra hour in bed,not if the dog has naything to do with it.
Interesting to note that Apple are taking a real interest in Augmented Reality(AR) and have set up an office in New Zealand. Seem to be picking off the experts from Weta workshops and the like. Hope they have some ‘designs’ on education.
This months posting includes links to practical EdTech, elearning is dead,Augmented Reality, Performance support, OER, digital learning, digital student, VR and the Minecraft effect, micro learning,NMC Library report conferences and the odd one out.

1. Performance Support: Insights from Jane Hart. This is a free ebook download by Trivantis, from someone who is well known in the world of work place learning. A very interesting and useful guide which should serve you well in your course development deliberations for improving work place learning.

2. Traditonal eLearning is Dead: An interesting opinion piece based on a presentation by Juliette Denny at a recent Learning Technologies conference. Is she right? Is there a real need for a sea change in the learning environment? and will it happen soon? One of my friends and colleague at an AUT University in Auckland would probably echo her sentiments. Scroll down the pages for more insights into the death of elearning.

3.The Practical EdTech Handbook. This is a carefully constructed guidebook, aimed essentially at schools but equally valuable for other levels of education. It’s free, and contains basic commonsense advice and guides to using and managing various aspects of education technology in the classroom. Join the email list to get notice of the next (updated) edition. Move cursor across the top of the panel to reveal download arrow on the right hand side.

5.LibreText: Chemistry. Always great to have a range of free open access resources. The LibreTexts approach is highly collaborative where an Open Access textbook environment is under constant revision by students, faculty, and outside experts to supplant conventional paper-based books. Great stuff and an excellent example of what can happen if you actually ask students to collaborate and contribute to the learning environment. I’ve just linked to Chemistry, however there are many more subjects to explore:Biology, Geology, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Social Sciences, Engineering ,Medicine, Agriculture, Photosciences and Humanities. Amazing resource!

8. THE ROLE OF DIGITAL LEARNING IN ASIA’S EDUCATIONAL FUTURE. This Discussion Paper presents a vision of how curricula utilising digital technologies can aid in improving students’ motivation and learning throughout Asia. Some of what is discussed is I’m sure relevant to countries other than those in Asia. A useful document with some interesting ideas and resources.

I note the author of this article uses the term ‘Learning Object’ as guide to what micro learning is. Learning objects have been around a long time too. Useful to put you in the picture and maybe consider changing the way you facilitate learning.
