G’day
finished planting the Garlic on the 21st June, shortest day. One year from now should be able to conquer the market,not. Not much else happening in the garden except for loads of leaves falling all over the place. Time to spend indoors which has involved looking at various assessment techniques and associated questions used over the past 50 years. Fascinating stuff; not much changes. Same assessment, different name. However I did digress to have a look at some National UK test cards (found in the loft)produced in 1887 for Standard Seven students (1st year secondary school age, probably 11 to 12+ yrs old). Thought I would share a couple with you.
Those of you who are brilliant will solve them right away. Other’s of us will be pleased that we didn’t have to answer them. I wonder if any of the modern generation would be able to solve them easily? Anyway here they are. (Answers next month)

Q.1 Two oranges are worth three apples, four apples are worth seven nuts, and eight nuts are worth eleven cherries: how many oranges are worth 693 cherries ?
[My first attempt was not very fruitful]
Q.2 If twenty men can reap 24 acres 3 roods. l8 poles in 1/2 a day: how much could twenty-flve men reap in 3/5th of a day ?

3.Student digital experience tracker 2017: the voice of 22,000 UK learners. Another excellent report from the JISC stable. Should provide you with some useful information on what students think and do with digital technologies.Based on the report, it may be that there will be some changes to how technology enhanced learning is facilitated within your institution.

4.Mayer’s 12 Principles of Multimedia Learning: A useful list of principles to benchmark against your latest incredible presentation crammed with all the bells and whistles. I did ‘watch’ a presentation the other day on Economics and Business and mentally ticked off the Principles, about three were met.

5.In Global Voices in Higher Education, scholars from 10 different countries share their work, describing not only their research but also the context in which their work exists.
This publication is another valuable ‘open access’ resource that provides a wealth of information on developing trends and guides and advice for those in academia seeking to improve the environments in which students learn and the technology that support their learning. Read Chapter 1: Tectonic Plates: Leading and Advancing Technology Enhanced Learning By Dominique Parrish and Joanne Joyce McCoach as an example of the quality and relevance of the material,( apart from being a useful paper).

6.Technology enhanced High Impact Practice for Authentic Learning: Byas,T and Cercone, A., International Journal for the Scholarship of Technology Enhanced Learning, Volume 1 Issue 2, 2017,Pages 35 to 66.
Queensborough Community College in the USA, claims that ‘using technology engages students in authentic learning, where they asynchronously collaborate to create and disseminate products that address discipline specific learning outcomes.’ Read this interesting paper in a relatively new journal and decide if this is true.

7. Interactive Education:Impact of the Internet on Learning and Teaching.
Extract from the site: ‘This site covers how to begin, how to operate, and how to make Web-based courses successful and enjoyable. 10.Using Reading and Writing to Support Learning. Written for students in Texas but the principles and practice can definitely be applied to all students.
