G’day
It’s SoTEL 2019 month, apart from all the other innovative stuff that’s going on in education of course. A great programme with excellent presenters leading the way.I’m going to have a busy but great time at the event.
Summer in NZ has at last got under way and the Garden has produced lots of roughage (fibre, not the internet type) Picked the 5th Kg of beans last week and now the plants have a second wind; cucumbers are 35cm+,potatoes 8Kg from 6 spuds. Not bad eh? Tomatoes have provided numerous meals for the thrushes, blackbirds , fantails and the like despite copious amounts of netting. Hi Ho, someone has to feed them.
There’s plenty of interesting material and resources in this months posting. I particularly like the 125 rubrics in the Website on Objective Design and Instructional Alignment; what a wealth of useful material.
In this posting there are links to Edtech future, MOOC’s, Objective Design and Instructional Alignment, Feedback for learning, Edtech trends, Technology in teaching, Professional development workshops,TEL handbook, Copyright issues, Acts of kindness , Conferences, NZ happenings and the odd one out.
More will come marching in next month.
1. Edtech 2K19, what’s in store? From the Jisc blog an interesting opinion piece on what to expect in the near and distant future where edtech is concerned.
https://www.jisc.ac.uk/blog/edtech-2k19-whats-in-store-08-jan-2019
2. Objective Design and Instructional Alignment. One of a series of very comprehensive self assessment instruments incorporating rubrics; 125 in all I am lead to believe. I haven’t read through the lot but it’s a pretty impressive resource (released by Pearson in 2016)
3. MOOCs in Decline: Insights into multi year data from MIT and Harvard. Some interest ‘trends?’ data and statistics. What’s the significance?
Have a look at some other interesting stats: MOOC roundup 2018.

4. Feedback for learning: closing the assessment loop. A useful document which provides some excellent material to assist with creating and operating effective and efficient student feedback systems
Extract from the report: ‘This project set out to identify examples of successful feedback practices and, importantly, to investigate the underlying conditions and contextual factors that make them successful’.
5. How to start using technology in your teaching:This resource walks you through the key decision points you need to consider when beginning to use technology (to engage students) within the lecture hall. Based on personal experience of the author. Provides real insights into issues associated with using technology to enhance learning.

6.Understanding Educational Technology Trends and Issues:Tools: Online Communication and Collaboration. I stumbled upon this site whilst exploring for something else. It’s a FREE online graduate course. Lots of useful resources, guides, ideas and tips. Worth perusing.
Change the url to ‘/Week-1/ ‘ or 3 and there’s a whole lot more to explore.

7. SmartCopying: The official Guide to Copyright issues for Australian Schools and TAFE. Never mind that this is written for Australians, the content is very interesting and potentially useful for others considering complex issues around copyright. Good resources and examples throughout the open education section and others.

8. Technology Enhanced Learning Handbook, York St John University. Another useful and well structured document/guide produced by a specific university for its staff and students. Much of the content (apart from York specific) could be applied elsewhere. Extract: ‘this Handbook should act as a reference for good practice and developmental approaches to technology enhanced learning, and assist staff to meaningfully incorporate technology into the learning, teaching and assessment approach of their modules.’
9. Concept to Classroom: A series of workshops. These online workshops are free and in many ways are designed to support professional development of a whole range of people who are active in the education sector. Very comprehensive and detailed framework for each workshop with associated resources; even includes lesson plans. USA focussed but much is applicable elsewhere. Well worth exploring.

10.The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation (RAK). This is a bit different. Worth spending some time reading through. Applies to all levels of education and any community. Extract from the site: ‘Our goal is to provide engaging, accessible, high-quality resources to support schools, homes, individuals and communities in taking action to develop a culture of kindness’.
